'If you were to ask me what it is I'm into, I'd simply answer- art, science and technology. I know,... that covers a lot of territory'. Born in the San Diego, California suburb of National City and raised in the west San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, and comes from an artistically inclined family.
The moniker 'Dark Star' comes from his interest in physics and astronomy including black holes (along with other science disciplines). Partev comes from a school of thought that thinks the term 'black hole' is a misnomer and incorrect term to use, and that 'dark star' is a more correct and accurate term to use. And so during the CB-Radio days of the 1970's, Dark Star was one of Partev’s call-signs or handles, as they were known (call-signs and handles being their over the airwave radio names). Dark Star continues to be his call-sign, moniker and his call-sign on the web networks.
Art in all the Family:
His maternal Grandfather was a painter with his own gallery and studio. There, Partev learned to draw by age-5, paint by age-7 and frame his first painting at age-11. Soon after, he took up photography and later film, doing 16mm film editing (or film cutting) at his middle school. Also in middle school he took up industrial drawing.
Partev's father and two paternal uncles were all performers doing music, stage, radio shows and the odd film now and then, and some early TV (during the 1950's). One of the uncles as a concert grade violinist who studied voice and violin and also taught violin at the Music Conservatory in Mexico City. That uncle later became a contract player at MGM Studios in seven films under the stage name Carlos Conde from about 1950 to 1954. Partev caught the bug at an early age, doing in music and acting at his middle school, as well as working backstage on local community amateur productions that his father was in.
His middle school drama teacher was unlike any in the Los Angeles public school system. Other teachers worked within the box of their own comfort zones with little or no deviation, while William S. Greene was a teacher of a different stripe. For Mr. Greene, the whole of theatre and acting was his comfort zone. For him it was- there is all this repertoire, there are all these techniques, step up to the buffet, take a taste of everything, find what you like that works for you and run with it. That attitude towards theatre, acting and story telling through dramatization has remained with Partev all these years.
From primary school to the present Partev has continued to be involved in both the visual arts (drawing, painting, photography and film) and performing arts (acting and music, but admits he can't dance).
